Court orders Waymo to keep Robotaxi Safety from DMV

Waymo is an independent driving arm of Alphabet that won in its decision to keep a few details of the Audio Visual technology used by them. This one was granted to them by the California Court recently. This company filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Motor Vehicles earlier in January to maintain some of its information private. This data was related to its independent automobile deployment permits. Furthermore, they also decided to maintain secrecy in the emails shared between the company and the DMV.

It was rectified earlier from the request made by the public records, which was previously filed by one of the anonymous third parties. Sacramento, the California Superior Court’s ruling had set a precedent for broader trade secret protection in the independent automobile industry. It involved the public having access to the information concerned about public safety, which the businesses claimed as information containing trade secrets.

In their lawsuit, Waymo also argued that they were forced to disclose their trade secrets, which could eventually underestimate their investments made into the automated driving technology. This could have a chilling effect in this industry, where it could be said that DMV was no longer a secure space for firms to share their confidential tech information transparently.

Waymo is pleased to know that the California court made the correct decision in granting their request for a preliminary injunction excluding the reveal of the confidential and competitive trade secrets that Waymo included in their permit application while submitting it to the DMV of California.

Moreover, they will continue to share safety openly along with other essential data on their independent driving operations and technology. They would do so while identifying the detailed tech information they share with their regulators, which is otherwise not meant for sharing with the public.

So, similar to the other autonomous driving tech companies searching for testing and deploying in California, the firm Waymo decided to submit their technology and safety practice information to California’s DMV. More specific questions then followed it.
